Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo – One of the Best KDrama of All Time
“Do you like Messi?”
Kim Bok Joo (Lee Sung Kyung), who has always been able to lift heavy things since she was a little girl is the ace of weightlifting team. Then there is Jung Joon Hyung (Nam Joo-Hyuk) who is also an athlete, he is a well known swimmer, however he has a problem of being disqualified from competitions most of the time because of numerous of false starts.
Neither of them realizes that they once attended the same school before. Through a series of events, Bok Joo found herself having her first crush with a nutritionist, Jae-Yi (Lee Jae-Yoon), who happens to be Joon Hyun’s big brother. When Joon Hyung found out about it, he teased Bok Joo endlessly. Despite being constantly teased by Joon Hyung, Bok Joo slowly realizes that she also started to open up to him the way she couldn’t with her best friends.
When I first heard about this drama, I didn’t feel like watching because the title make it sound like it was about some kind of fairytale story about weightlifting which does not interest me, at all. But after I finished this show, I realized that I could not have been more wrong. This drama is hands down one of the cutest drama I have ever seen before. It is so relatable and very well put together, it doesn’t feel like it was over exaggerated at all. WFKBJ is just those kind of drama that everybody can relate to, the characters are very genuine and simple but for some reason despite it being so simple I find myself unable to stop watching and I keep wanting more. WFKBJ keeps me engaged until the very end, it has a very good pace and a very unique and interesting characters.
Lee Sung Kyung surprises the hell out if me in this drama. I never know she could act, let alone act this well. She really knows how to act, I have never watch an actress cry in Kdramas and it immediately make me want to cry with her. That is how realistic and how good her acting is, it just makes you want to obliterate all of her problems and make her happy and give her all the love in he world. Sung Kyung is very versatile, she is able to differentiate all the kinds of emotions that goes through Bok Joo’s mind and portray it in a way that even the viewers could feel her pain, frustration, embarrassment. This drama is a total hit, I can’t imagine them casting anyone else but her for Kim Bok Joo’s role.
Bok Joo is really such a quirky and unique character, most Kdrama female characters are usually very soft spoken and they don’t cater to arguments and they tend to shy away but Bok Joo is just the exact opposite, she face problem head-on even if she doesn’t know what she is doing is right or wrong and she is not afraid of other people’s opinion. Despite what people do and say, she still stays true to herself which makes her character really unique and refreshing. On top of that I love how all Bok Joo’s mood swings could be solved with a little bit of Joon Hyun and a lot of food.
Bok Joo and Joon Hyung’s chemistry on screen is off the charts, there are moments in the show where he looks at her so lovingly, I can’t help melt. The way that they started off as friends and slowly develop into a couple–being able to see how they started from constantly bickering and fighting to secretly starting to care for one another and eventually fall in love with each other–the change happens so slow and gradually that you get to see each and every facet of the character.
I think one of the reasons why everybody love this couple so much is because of how pure and simple Bok Joo and Joon Hyun are. They don’t play any games with each other, the feelings between these two are so genuine and so sweet that you can’t help but root for them.
Not to mention, Bok Joo’s best friends are the best friends I wish to have in life. They always have her back no matter what, even when they are angry at her they still cannot help but to care for her and her well-being. The three of them really balances each other out; Nam Hee, who is the baby of the group and Seon Ho who is the logical one and Bok Joo who is brawler of the group who is always down to protect her friends. Not only does this drama has a to-die-for relationship, they also have to-die-for friendship.
I think I will always have a soft spot in my heart for this drama. WFKBJ is one of those dramas that seem simple and kind of silly even, but those kinds of drama are the ones that always surprises you and ended up having you craving for more.
