Why I Am In Love with Korean Drama : ‘Jealousy Incarnate’

“I will be stuck to you like octopus until the day I die”

Pyo Na Ri (Gong Hyo Jin) who is a weather caster at the time, has been having a one-sided crush on Lee Hwa Shin (Jo Jong-Suk) for 3 years. When Pyo Na Ri was assigned to go to Thailand for a work related trip she met the perfect man, Go Jung Won (Go Kyung-Pyo), who is also a close friend of Hwa Shin. When Jung Won shows his interest in Na Ri.

She realized that she too is attracted to him and decided to curb her crush to Hwa Shin for good. Hwa Shin, who is a narcissistic and egocentric star reporter would be always be rude to Na Ri whenever she tries to start up a conversation and that was how it has been for 3 years. He was assigned to live in Thailand after exposing his older brother’s business for corruption and decided to come back to Korea to go after the News Anchor position.

Thanks to Pyo Na Ri, Hwa Shin found out that he has breast cancer. When he was in denial, trying to not seek for treatment and pretending that his breast cancer didn’t exist, Na Ri is the one is by his side and kept encouraging him to get the treatment that he needs. That is when Lee Hwa Shin see the side of Na Ri that he had never realized before and can’t help but slowing developing feelings for Na Ri.

A Sneak Peek Into The Movie :

Have you ever watched a drama so confusing (in a good way), that you just give up trying to guess and just let the flow of the drama takes you wherever it wants to take you? To me, it’s this drama. Jealousy Incarnate should win all the awards for love triangle drama. I swear you won’t find a love triangle drama more epic than this one. Characters in this drama works really well with each other, even the supporting character holds an important and dear spot in my heart. Being me, I usually pay all my attention to the flow of the story and almost none in the editing style, but this drama’s editing really did caught my attention. It is so cute–sometimes flirty even, and very different from most Korean dramas.

When I first started watching this drama, I actually hated it and was ready to drop it because Hwa Shin was such a self-absorbed asshole, and he is the main character. I think to myself how the heck would I be able to support a character for 24 episodes when already, I can’t even stand him in just a few episodes. But I convinced myself to keep going, and let me tell it, it was one of the best decisions ever. This show does start off a little bit slow at first, but it snow-balled pretty quickly too. Before you know it, you have your eyes stuck to the screen and you stayed up all night to marathon this show. Not to mention, I love that this show brought up the topic of breast cancer awareness in men, and the fact that they are able to approach it in a fun and witty way.

This is the second drama of Jo Jung-Suk’s that I have watched and I liked the fact that he is so good at playing a narcissistic, egocentrical asshole. He would be so hard to stand at first but eventually as the show progressed, you will find yourself starting to understand his point of view and where he is coming from, not to mention, he really knows how to sing too. This drama is actually the first drama that made me go back and forth between the first lead and the second lead. Usually, I have no problem deciding which one I would root for, but with this show though, I am honestly like a rabbit jumping towards Hwa Shin and Jung Won. I mean, how could you not?

How could you not root for the second lead as well when he looks at her and treat her like this? I have never in my entire time of watching Korean dramas have I root for a second lead this hard.

Review :

And the bromance in this show is to die for. Jung Won is the kind of friend that everybody would want. Honestly, Jung Won is just the kind of person everyone would need in their life, period. He is so giving and loyal, he is the only one who understands Hwa Shin for what he really means rather that what he said. While Hwa Shin is the one who goes around and acts like a jerk to everybody, and he would sometimes bully Jung Won, and acts like he doesn’t care about him when he actually cares a lot. Even when the two of them fight, it is visible that they still care about each other.

Moreover, I don’t know if this is just me not paying enough attention to the show but I feel like this show doesn’t introduce some of their characters well enough, like the girl who is with Kim Rai who plays as a chef, at first I thought she was his wife because there is a child in the scene when they are together, and yet, I realized I was wrong.

The producers of the show just decided to put her there with littlest explanation as to who she is and what her background is. And Go Jung-Won, maybe it is just me, but at first I thought he was the owner of SBC, and I was once again proven wrong, I know that he is rich, I have a guess that he is doing retailer, but it was a guess and not a clear picture for me. I ended up having to look it up online to know what his character’s job is.

Eventually you realize that when Na Ri is with Hwa Shin, she is challenged by him and he pushed her hard at times, yet sometimes when you expected him to be screaming on top of his lungs he just turns around and proves you wrong. Seeing him change from narcissistic to gentle and loving is just such a satisfying transition for me. Who would have thought that someone as self absorbed and narcissistic as Lee Hwa Shin could be so giving and generous when he falls in love?

The relationship between Na Ri and Jung Won is too perfect, bland even. While I do partly blame this because of the lack of air time between Na Ri and Jung Won, I feel like this is not exactly a 100% fair fight on winning Na Ri’s heart because there are more scenes with Hwa Shin than with Jung Won even though they are both fighting for the same thing. However, whenever Na Ri is with Hwa Shin, it feels like you can see that she expresses more of herself when she is with him.

In the last few episodes the writer kind of shafted a lot of other supporting characters and focused all the spotlight on the main lead. I just wish there would be more screen time for the supporting characters as well, this way the writer made it seem like they just use the supporting characters to build up the story and now that the story is rolling they just put most of them to the side. Screen time between main leads and supporting character could be a little bit more equal.

“You will be the subject of my curiosity forever”

I do believe that Na Ri has never really fallen out of love with Hwa Shin, she has always loved him. But when Jung Won came into the picture, she took that chance to use Jung Won as a way to force herself to get over Hwa Shin. There are so many emotions that you can see and feel with this show, but in a nutshell, those two guys show the differences between liking someone and loving someone. You can have everything desirable in a man or woman, but if the spark isn’t there…it’s just not there.
