Review : Why I Love The Movie, Tomorrow I Will Date Yesterday’s You

This movie introduces us to a guy named Takatoshi Minamiyama (Sota Fukushi) who was majoring in art at a university in Kyoto. One morning, while he was on the train to school, he was captivated
by a girl who was standing not so far away from him. He then realized, in the first time in all of his 20 years old of life, he was in love.
Takatoshi was flustered, unsure whether to try and talk to her or let this opportunity go. He then made a gamble with himself, saying that if she were to get down on the same station as he would, then he would talk to her. When it turned out that the girl got down in the same station as Takatoshi, he gathered all his courage and decided to approach her. He learn that she was called Emi Fukuju (Nana Komatsu) and she was attending a vocational school for hairdressing. From there on, they grew closer and closer, until one day Emi told him the truth about everything.

Review :
This is going to be a short review because I do not want to spoil too much of the movie and basically the whole movie is the spoiler, so I would like to apologize beforehand for that.
I have been waiting for almost a year to be able to watch this movie and I have finally gotten my hands on it. I should say that this movie was way different from what I expected it to be. I knew before watching this movie that the girl was keeping something from the guy, and I have thought that she would reveal to him that she was into same sex partner (yes, I have a wild imagination), but boy oh boy was I wrong. I would have never been able to expect such a twist, even now my head is still reeling from this movie.
First of all, I love the cinematography and how the director presented this movie. It was very simplistic yet it showed the beauty of not only the place but also the relationship between two people who’s in love. Despite the concept of this movie, I think it was very well balanced by the relatable everyday scenes.

Going into this movie, I already knew it was going to be a romance movie, which I do not mind at all. At first it looks just like any other romance movies out there, they would talk and date and build their relationship. However, every now and then Takatoshi would catch her crying at random moments, and whenever he points that out, she would always reason that she is a sentimental person. And Takatosh did not really question that until eventually, Emi decided to tell Takatoshi the reason why.

Midway through the movie, as I try to wrap my head around it, I find myself having questions that the movie weren’t able to provide. Maybe because this is the movie version of the book, so some parts were cut short, making the director having to cut out some parts.
However I feel like this movie focused a lot on developing the relationship between the two main characters and how they would cope and handle the truth, that they neglected all the other aspects of the movie. With that, it also left so many questions unanswered and so many things unexplained.
When you really analyzes this movie and you dig deeper, I believe that there are loopholes with the concept of the story. But emotively, if you just roll with it, it is a lovely story telling device.
The Verdict :
In summary, this was a great and beautifully made movie. “Tomorrow I Will Date With Yesterday’s You” makes you think more about the situation in which the two main characters were and what the consequences of the actions mean to them. The story is well written, albeit it seemingly to be hard to understand at first, but they are a transition of interest that makes you understand it perfectly.
