Mom, I Think I Might be Crushing on A Korean Artist Named Henry Lau!
It has been a while since I whip up a post solely dedicated to a Korean Artist. But lately, I just started watching a Korean Drama called : Oh My Venus, and I could not help but notice this quirky guy who plays as the manager of a very famous yet mysterious athlete. At first, I did not think much about his acting in the drama as this guy who seems to switch between Korean language and English like it’s nobody’s business.
But then, the more I watch the show, the more curious I got. And I ended up looking up his name in the internet. When I found out that Henry, despite being able to switch between Korean language and English with ease in the Korean Drama, in real life, he actually really do speak fluent English. In addition to Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese and French.
Yes. I know. Shocked? You haven’t seen nothing yet.
On top of being fluent and comfortable in all those languages, the man can also play violin, piano, keyboard, guitar and percussion! To add icing on top of the already very delectable cake?
He sings too.
Not going to lie, but when I look at him and his achievements in life, and then compare it to me and my life, I feel like a sad, under accomplished potato.
Check out the videos of him below playing musical instruments :
I mean. I am speechless. How can someone be this talented, but I have never heard of him before? And I think, obviously, for someone with this level of talent, if he were to be a singer, then the clear choice would have been a solo singer right?
He was in a boyband group called Super Junior.
He debuted in Super Junior – M (Mandarin) in 2008. However, trouble seems to rise in early 2017 with Henry posting an Instagram post hinting on his trouble with his agency, SM Entertainment.
In the post, Henry writes :
“It’s tiring. I’m exhausted. I can’t do it alone any longer. It’s been a mistake since 9 years ago. It’s become so big I can’t support it anymore. What do I do now?”
“I……I only have my fans now. If you see this message please speak on my behalf, the company won’t listen to me.”
It has been a well known thing that label agencies in Korea tend to not treat their artists well. Most of the time – especially when it comes to big label agencies that takes on a lot of popular artists or singers – it has been reported that their artists tend to be overworked and underpaid.
And as of April 29th 2018, his label decided not to renew Henry’s contract. Which also means, 10 years since his debut in Super Junior, Henry is finally leaving his label, SM Entertainment, behind. While this must be shocking to a lot of his fans, I am actually quite happy that it turns out this way.
Henry has way too many talents to have it all hidden in a boyband group. I personally believe that he will be able to shine brighter if he were to be a solo-artist. Fortunately to my excitement, it has been reported that after Henry’s departure from SM Entertainment, he plans on opening his own agency to further his career in South Korea.
I truly wish him all the best from here on out. Henry Lau is definitely one of the most underrated, talented artist I have seen in my long life of fangirling, i sincerely hope for him to gain more popularity in the future.
