Movie Mini Reviews : What Movies I Have Been Watching in May 2019

Okay. To be honest, initially, I planned on this to be a full blown review on each and every single movie that I have watched throughout the past month. I even have the outline in mind and everything too. The only problem?

You girl is an avid procrastinator.

Another supporting reason? She’s hella lazy too.

Okay, now I’m just being obnoxious by adding cute gifs to get into your good graces. *laughs*

My intentions were good, the execution? Not so much. Well, at least we can say I tried. Despite my lazy ass however, your girl is still one very opinionated fella and would jump at every opportunity to express herself.  So with that said, I decided to still write review –– albeit a mini one –– on the movies that I have watched.

Without further ado, let’s get crackin’.

1. 10 Cloverfield Lane

After getting in a car accident, Michelle awakens to find herself in a mysterious bunker with two men named Howard and Emmett. Howard offers her a pair of crutches to help her remain mobile with her leg injury sustained from the car crash and tells her to “get good on those” before leaving the bunker. She has been given the information that there has been an alien attack and the outside world is poisoned. However, Howard and Emmett’s intentions soon become questionable and Michelle is faced with a question: Is it better in here or out there?

This is one of the very few movies that took me by surprise.

By watching the trailer alone, I don’t think anyone could really grasp what the storyline really was about. And I really like that. Because most of time, more often than not, just by watching a 3 minute trailer alone, we can pretty much already guess what the movie is all about. And the fact that the trailer to this movie revealed close to absolutely nothing of what is going on, piqued my curiosity.

I went into the movie blind, reading no reviews nor did I try to look up what this movie is all about. And I could not be any happier that I did.

Because boy oh boy, did this movie took me through a loop.

There are only a handful of movies that was able to have me scratch my head in confusion and change my opinions on the characters and storyline with each passing moment. And I am happy to say that this movie was one of them. Throughout the movie, I was unable to predict what was going to happen next –– try as I might. I kept jumping from one conclusion to the next, only to still fail trying to decipher what was going on.

10 Cloverfied Lane gave out a lot of different vibes throughout the movie to keep its viewers on their toes. Because one second I thought the main character was going to die only to think that she’s in a good company after all, only to jump back to worrying that she is going to die.

If you are now as confused and curious as I first was, welcome to the club. If you ever decide that you want something to break the mundaness of every day life and need a movie to through your head through a loop, I would recommend this movie. And make sure to not read up on any reviews –– other than this one, of course –– or summary about the plot line. Because one of the reasons that made this movie so enjoyable to me was the fact that I decided to plunge into it without knowing anything in advance.

2. Sinister

True-crime writer Ellison Oswalt moves himself and his family into a house where a horrific crime took place earlier, but his family doesn’t know. He begins researching the crime so that he can write a new book about it to help his flailing career. He uses some “snuff” film footage he finds in the house to help him in his research, but he soon finds more than he bargained for. There is a figure in each of the films but who or what is it? As a result, his family start to suffer (as does he) and things take a turn for the worst. Will they survive?

You know, after watching this movie, I think I am convinced that I might be dead inside. Because girl, if I need to summarize this movie in one word, it would be: disappointing.

I kept hearing about how scary this movie was. How some people’s balls –– pardon my language –– shrink and just basically up and ran away for their lives because of how terrifying it was. But throughout the whole movie, I honestly was trying really hard to keep my interest on the film and not just skip it altogether.

I suppose the premise of the story was scary(?) And maybe even the cold dreadful feeling that something bad is going to happen that it gives off throughout helped make it scary? But in the end, it did little to help immerse me fully into the story and I could not be arsed to care or even bat an eyelid about what happened to the family.

But hey, don’t take my word for granted on this one. Because a lot of people enjoyed it, some even claimed to be scarred for life because of it.

3. Get Out

Chris and his girlfriend Rose go upstate to visit her parents for the weekend. At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

I wouldn’t go as far to say that this movie is a masterpiece, but it came very close to one.

Before watching this, I have heard about the buzz that’s surrounding the director Jordan Peele and his movies, apparently he received a lot of praises for this movie and even more for this newest movie UsAnd since I have never been the kind of person who needs to always be in the “know” about the newest most popular movie at the moment, I don’t really care much for this movie.

Until much recently, when I started on my horror movie binge and stumbled upon this movie. And let me tell you, I could not be happier that I did.

I suppose if we were to really dissect this movie and to really go in on it, this isn’t much of a traditional horror movie but more of a psychological horror. “Get Out” touches on a lot of sensitive issues, one of which is racism. There also seem to be –– from what I have read –– a lot of little subtleties and Easter eggs that Peele dropped in this movie for the keen eye to catch that gave this movie a deeper meaning that what meets the naked eye.

I am not going to go too deep into this review, since I meant for it to be short and if we start talking about all the going ons and subtle hints this movie have, I might need to blow this up into a full post. *laughs*

With that said, definitely check this movie out. It is one of those movies that will definitely make you think and leave quite an impact on its viewers.

4. Avengers : End Game

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos, that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks, compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films –– Avengers: Endgame.

Even after rewatching the whole Avengers series after watching Endgame two to three time –– yes, that’s an awful lot I know –– I’m still obsessed.

For those of you who have watched Endgame, you already know how it ended. And for those of you who haven’t, worry not, a girl ain’t gonna do you dirty like that. There will be no spoiler whatsoever in this review, which is why I will keep it sweet and short.

I have never been a big Marvel movie fan. I mean, sure, I enjoy it. Just like everyone else enjoy superhero movies, we are in it for a fun time, some explosions and maybe those abs. But I have never put a lot of thought and emotion into superhero movies. Until Endgame.

I would never in a million years thought that I have, throughout the years of watching Marvel movies, developed some kind of emotional connection with all these avengers, but apparently I have. I have slowly but surely invested my emotions and thought into these Marvel characters’ well being. Wishing for their victorious comeback every time they went into battle as I root for them while munching on my popcorn and they are out there kicking ass and killing enemies.

Out of all the Avengers series that I have watched, while this one might not be my favorite, it definitely is one of the most impactful. Because I mean, I teared up while watching this movie. That should say something about how emotionally invested I am while watching it. As for the ending, I think they tied it up perfectly and beautifully, leaving just enough loose ends to branch out into other storylines yet also giving the viewers closure on what have been an amazing journey.

Thank you Marvel for all the amazing heroes that you have given us throughout the years. Here is for many more years to come.
