Ahn Jae Hyun & Ku Hye Sun Break Up –– An Organized Update
Another day, another news of break up.
The break up between Ahn Jae Hyun and Boys Over Flowers Ku Hye Sun has been all over the news as of late. While your girl normally do not dabble in gossip, this one grabbed my attention for some reason, and I decided that I wanted to write a summarized report about how this all started. Because right now, everything is starting to sound a lot like “he says, she says” and we all know when the knot is already that tangled, it’s hard to know which side to take.
So without further ado, let’s get crackin’.
Who is Ahn Jae Hyun?
Ahn Jae Hyun is a South Korean model and actor. He started his is career as a fashion model in 2009, and slow getting more recognition throughout the years as he also started appearing in music videos and variety shows.
There was a very popular drama called My Love From Another Star (2013), and Jae Hyun happened to star in that show as well, which propels his rise to fame. As his popularity sky rockets, Ahn Jae Hyun too, started getting more offers to star in Korean dramas. Some of which that he accepted was : You’re All Surrounded (2014), Blood (2015), Cinderella with Four Knights (2016), Reunited Worlds (2017) and The Beauty Inside (2018).
Who is Ku Hye Sun ?
Many of us might not know her name by heart, but when the word “Boys Over Flowers” was mentioned, what were the things that come to mind?
For me, firstly it was Lee Min Ho (duh) and then it was this short haired girl that was poor that ended up dating Lee Min Ho in the drama. I can picture her face crystal clearly in my mind, although I’m not sure what her name is…
Wait. Is this her? Is she Ku Hye Sun?
Ding Ding Ding! That’s her folks. This woman is probably one of the very first Korean actresses out there that singlehandedly helped introduced so many international viewers to the Korean drama/Kpop land.
Ku Hye Sun’s Career
Hye Sun used to be a trainee under SM Entertainment, before switching over to DSP Media to debut in a girl group called Ria. However, after that too, ended up failing, she eventually decided to sign under YG Entertainment. Initially, she was set to debut as a singer, supposedly as one of the 2NE1’s member. In the end however, she was suggested by the CEO of YG to purse acting, instead of music.
Her rose to fame was slow but steady, as she continued to accept tv show offers and continued to surprise critics with her acting skills. It was in 2009 that her fame skyrocketed as she played the role of Geum Jan-di in a megahit Korean drama Boys Over Flowers, with Lee Min Ho as her co-star. It was there that she quite literally became a household name in Korea, with everyone raving and talking about her.
Other than being an actress, she also dabbles in singing/song-writing, directing, and in writing and drawing as well.
How It All Started
The couple officially registered their marriage at the Gangnam district office on May 20, 2016 and married on May 21, 2016. The news of their marriage was met with a lot of support and love, with quite a handful of netizens being jealous yet happy for their seemingly loving and romantic relationship.
On August 18, 2019, Ku Hye Sun posted an image of text messages between her and her husband Ahn Jae-hyun discussing divorce to her Instagram account. Another image was posted with a caption that explained she wanted to preserve her marriage, while Ahn Jae Hyun did not. The posts were soon later deleted.
In the since-deleted post that showed a picture with the handwritten Korean characters, “I love you, Koo Hye Sun. I love you. Koo Hye Sun”, the actress wrote: “After we lost our spark, my husband has had a change of heart and wants a divorce, and I want to stay married. (Next week, representatives of my husband will be releasing news reports, and I am informing you that they are completely untrue. I hope that the truth will come to light.)”
An hour after Ku Hye Sun posted and deleted the post on her Instagram, she then went to post a (now deleted) text between her and Ahn.
Ahn: I already told the New Journey To The West (a variety show) staff the day before yesterday that I’ll be releasing the [divorce] agreement and the press statement that you gave me three days ago next week, and I’m currently in the process of discussing it with [the New Journey To The West staff].
Koo: Not next week. Depending on how my mum’s doing.
Koo: To me, New Journey To The West isn’t more important than how my mum’s doing.
Ahn: We’ve already come to an agreement, and all that’s left is the paperwork. I think it would be a meaningless meeting. Let’s move forward as scheduled, then I’ll meet your mother.
Ahn: I’ve also called her.
Koo: I heard that you have made plans to meet. Contact me when you meet.
Koo: Just like you persuaded her when we got married, take responsibility and persuade her about our divorce. Paperwork isn’t hard.
The actress had also captioned the post: “My mother has received a shock and is not in good health, which is why I have posted these words. I’m sorry”.
Ahn: … and I don’t think it will be easy to sort out. I think it will be overwhelming for your mother, and I’m also overwhelmed. Let’s proceed with things according to plan, and I’ll meet her [another time].
Koo: Work is more important than my mum?
Koo: What kind of loathsome talk is this?
Ahn: I will speak to your mother on the phone.
Ahn: I don’t know what to say to her in person.
Koo: But you should still take responsibility. If you act callously like this, I’m not going to stand by and watch.
Koo: Meet her in person and apologise … for the fact that you aren’t able to keep your promises when we got married.
Koo: Why is work important? If you say work is more important than my mum, then I really won’t hold back.
Ku deleted this post after a few hours and uploaded a new post with another screenshot of her text messages to Ahn, addressing their impending divorce. She captioned the post with, “Yesterday, I was in a rush to upload what I did because I expected official statements would be made today. Though we were in the process of talking about a divorce, we had not signed or agreed on a final decision yet. The official statement was made without consulting me. I wish to protect my family.”
After Ku deleted her previous post on Instagram, at 1:40 am, she went on to post this :
In the long text she sent Ahn, Goo said that she has lost trust in both their marriage and the talent agency, HB Entertainment. She mentioned that there were Kakao Talk messages of Ahn badmouthing her to the CEO of HB Entertainment and that when she brought it up, they said, “If I want it, they will terminate my contract and I think it’s right for me to leave the agency.”
She continued by saying, “I know that once I leave, rumours about a divorce would begin so I’m willing to get a divorce immediately, as you wanted. But if I leave the agency and we get a divorce, I will have no work so please send me the balance of our Yongin house.“
Goo went on to say that both parties should go through the divorce proceedings with their respective lawyers and that, “The reasons are the same as before. Your change of heart. Damage of trust. And I will accept that fact. Speak the truth.”
He Says, She Says
As she did with the previous posts, Ku did eventually take down her previous Instagram posts regarding their marriage and text screenshots. On August 19, Ku released a public statement addressing the divorce officially, via her legal representative. In the statement, she also accused Ahn of allegedly frequently calling other women while in an intoxicated state.
Ahn finally broke the silence on August 21, denying that he was talking about his wife to the CEO of HB Entertainment behind her back. He also accused her of allegedly breaking into his home while he was asleep to check his private messages. Upon hearing about his response, Ku responded with her own rebuttal via her social media page. She said that she had every right to enter the apartment as they were still husband and wife. She also recounted moments where she supported Ahn financially and claimed that he wanted a divorce because she was “not sexy“.
On August 22 it was reported that Ahn felt very wronged by his wife’s action of airing so much of their private matters online. Ahn seemed to have the plans to reveal the complete text messages shared between the two that Ku previously only revealed snippets of.
Personally, I Think
Honestly, the more research I do on these –– now turned into –– he says, she says story, the more confused I get. All of the snapshots that was posted by Ku seemed to have been something that should have been solved behind closed doors, instead of having it aired out for the whole world to witness.
There were many more claims that Ku made about Ahn, saying that he was being abusive, or that he was cheating on her, which at this point, I don’t know which was right and which was made up to add fuel to the fire. As I’m typing this post, the story is still progressing, with the latest update being that the couple were unable to divorce due to the custody of their cat. With Ku saying that Ahn was holding her cat hostage.
I’m not sure how much further their situation is going to escalate and how much more of their dirty laundry Ku is planning to post, however I am hoping that this get settled quickly. Because with the rate of things are going with her continuously badmouthing him on things that are absurd with only weird snippet of their texts on Instagram as proof and him not retaliating, is making her look bad in the public eye.
