To be honest with you, I haven’t felt the desire to read fiction novels in a while. Maybe it’s just my easily bored personality or the fact that I have consumed nothing but fiction novels the past few years that’s made me sick at the thought of it. But the past two years, it’s been really hard to me to read the books I usually read––which is why I switched to a different genre altogether, as well as switching up my mediums.

It’s been a long ass time since a book last caught my interest and spark that excitement in my butt. But with The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue for some reason I was just really hyped about the book. I mean heck, I don’t even read the books that V.E. Schwab wrote before this one. So it’s odd for me to be this into her new book that I have no idea what it’s about.

As soon as I got the book, I dug into it right away and found that it definitely did not disappoint. I’m not even halfway into the book yet, but I’m already sad that it’s going to end. Which is why I decided to whip up this blogpost. So that I have a post-The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue books to help mend me back to life. Because despite the title, I already know The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue not so invisible after all as it’s going to leave a mark on me.

Koschei the Deathless is to Russian folklore what devils or wicked witches are to European culture: a menacing, evil figure; the villain of countless stories which have been passed on through story and text for generations. But Koschei has never before been seen through the eyes of Catherynne Valente, whose modernized and transformed take on the legend brings the action to modern times, spanning many of the great developments of Russian history in the twentieth century.

Deathless, however, is no dry, historical tome: it lights up like fire as the young Marya Morevna transforms from a clever child of the revolution, to Koschei’s beautiful bride, to his eventual undoing. Along the way there are Stalinist house elves, magical quests, secrecy and bureaucracy, and games of lust and power. All told, Deathless is a collision of magical history and actual history, of revolution and mythology, of love and death, which will bring Russian myth back to life in a stunning new incarnation.
