Finishing Before Buying: A Journey to Mindful Consumption

In a world inundated with consumerism, finding balance and mindfulness in our purchasing habits is crucial. In recent times, I’ve found myself immersed in the world of perfumes, endlessly intrigued by the vast array of scents waiting to be explored. This newfound fascination led me down a path of collecting 2ml samples and 5ml decants, eager to sample as many fragrances as possible. However, I soon realized that my enthusiasm was leading to a hoarding mentality, prompting me to reassess my approach to consumption.

Embracing the Rule of “Finish Before Buying”

To curb my impulse to accumulate more perfumes, I implemented a simple yet effective rule: “one in, one out.” This meant that I wouldn’t allow myself to purchase a new fragrance until I had used up two to three 2ml samples or one 5-10ml decant. While initially challenging, this rule has proven to be a valuable tool in promoting mindful consumption. It encourages me to savor and fully appreciate each fragrance before moving on to the next, fostering a deeper connection with my collection.

Exploring Creative Solutions

In my quest to use up perfumes more efficiently, I’ve also discovered the art of layering scents. By combining floral fragrances with amber or musky scents, I’ve created unique and captivating blends that add depth and complexity to my olfactory experience. This not only helps me use up perfumes faster but also allows me to discover unexpected combinations that bring me joy.

Applying the Principle Beyond Perfumes

The principle of “finish before buying” extends beyond perfumes to other aspects of my life, such as makeup. Despite owning only three lipsticks, I’ve applied the same rule to prevent unnecessary accumulation. For instance, I’ve been eyeing a lip gloss from Dior, but I’ve made a pact with myself not to purchase it until I’ve finished one of my existing lipsticks. This approach serves as both a challenge and a motivator, encouraging me to make the most of what I already have rather than succumbing to the allure of new purchases.

A Journey Towards Mindful Consumption

While my journey towards mindful consumption is far from perfect, it is a continuous work in progress. By being intentional about how I spend my money and resources, I strive to avoid wastefulness and consumption for the sake of consumption. Through small yet meaningful changes in my habits, such as the “finish before buying” rule and creative solutions like scent layering, I am cultivating a more mindful and sustainable approach to living.

In conclusion, the practice of finishing before buying has transformed my perspective on consumption, encouraging me to prioritize quality over quantity and fostering a deeper appreciation for the things I already own. While it requires discipline and effort, the rewards of mindful consumption are immeasurable, leading to a more fulfilling and conscious way of life.
